Speaker Abstract
Zachary Bleemer is a labor economist who studies American higher education. In this lecture, he will discuss how universities' policies to restrict access to high demand majors such as computing, data science, engineering, economics, and some STEM fields have contributed to the substantial decline in the value of going to college for students from lower-income families. He will connect this with trends of rising meritocratic stratification and the end of race-based affirmative action that have altered the role of American higher education in promoting equitable growth and reducing inequality over the past 50 years.
