About Emily:

Emily Remirez joined CDSS as a Future of Higher Education postdoctoral fellow in September 2024. Within the College, she works primarily with undergrad research and the Data Discovery Program, with a focus on curriculum, assessment, and planning. Emily earned a BA in Linguistics from Rice University in 2015 and PhD from UC Berkeley in 2024. Using exemplar models, she studies the relationship between social categories, like gender or regional identity, and the low-level, automatic processing of spoken language. Her dissertation, “Modeling the role of social information in speech perception,” combines behavioral experiments and Python simulations. She’s also interested in science communication, research translation, and using art to engage broader audiences. Outside of work, Emily enjoys games & puzzles, art & DIY, and sci-fi & horror. She has a tiny terrier mix and loves animals. Emily is a Cuban American originally from the Gulf Coast of Texas.
