About George:
George Obaido is a passionate advocate for using data science to solve real-world problems and create positive societal impact. Joining CDSS is particularly meaningful because of his passion for fostering innovation and creating opportunities for students and researchers to tackle real-world challenges through data science and computing.
George earned his Ph.D. in computer science in 2020 from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he also completed his master’s degree. His academic journey has been driven by a desire to use technology to address pressing societal issues, particularly through the lens of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Beyond his professional work, George is an active volunteer with Equity and Access in Algorithms, Mechanisms, and Optimization (EAAMO), a research community committed to ensuring that algorithmic systems and resource allocation frameworks prioritize the perspectives and needs of marginalized communities.
At CDSS, George is excited to contribute to a vibrant academic ecosystem where curiosity, collaboration, and creativity thrive. He looks forward to mentoring students, supporting groundbreaking research, and fostering partnerships that advance the mission of the Data Discovery program and empower the next generation of data science leaders.
