How can we increase opportunities and limit the harms of AI? Learn how Berkeley faculty, students, and alumni are shaping the future by joining this timely conversation with Jennifer Chayes, dean of the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society, and Andy Konwinski, co-founder of Laude Institute, Laude Ventures, Databricks, and Perplexity. Their discussion will consider opportunities and challenges to harnessing AI for the public good.
This event is part of the UC Berkeley Alumni and Parents Weekend at Homecoming on Oct. 3–5.
Speakers:
Jennifer Chayes is dean of the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society, the first new college at UC Berkeley in more than 50 years. She is also a professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences, information, mathematics, and statistics. Before joining Berkeley in 2020, Jennifer led interdisciplinary labs and programs at Microsoft Research. Her research areas include phase transitions in computer science and structural and dynamical properties of networks, including modeling and graph algorithms. She completed her Ph.D. in mathematical physics at Princeton University.
Andy Konwinski, Ph.D. ’12, is co-founder of Laude Institute, Laude Ventures, Databricks, and Perplexity. His work stands at the intersection of research and real-world impact in AI, data, and software infrastructure. Andy runs Laude Ventures with Berkeley alum Pete Sonsini to invest in nascent technology startups with researcher founders. He recently launched Laude Institute to back computer scientists turning research into real-world impact. He completed his Ph.D. in computer science at UC Berkeley.
