UC Berkeley to House New Kavli Center on Ethics, Science

UC Berkeley will open a new Kavli Center for Ethics, Science, and the Public, creating space for interdisciplinary discussions about scientific discoveries, the ethics of that research and the public’s role in determining science’s trajectory, the university announced today.

The center, which will include researchers affiliated with the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society, will equip diverse students to develop public outreach tools and ethics frameworks for research in fields like artificial intelligence and gene editing.

“It’s not just about changing public policy, it’s about changing what it means to be a good scientist in every discipline that can have an impact on the public,” said Stuart Russell, a Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences professor and leader of the new center.

Saul Perlmutter, faculty director of the Berkeley Institute for Data Science and physics professor, is among the other experts who will help lead the Berkeley center. A second center will be housed at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
