UC Berkeley’s undergraduate data science program retained its No. 1 spot in the 2026 U.S. News and World Report rankings released today.
The university also held its No. 2 ranking in computer science at the undergraduate level. It shared that spot with Carnegie Mellon University and Stanford University. Berkeley was named the top public university in the rankings and recognized for its excellence in undergraduate programs across campus.
“We're encouraged to see the continued recognition of Berkeley’s excellence in data science and computer science, two fields that are changing our society dramatically,” said Jennifer Chayes, dean of the UC Berkeley College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS). "We have a momentous responsibility to educate the next generation of leaders to approach data and AI with an ethical mindset that benefits the public good."
The data science major, run by the Data Science Undergraduate Studies program within the college, was established in 2018. Some Berkeley-developed data science courses are shared with other colleges and universities in California and beyond as part of efforts to expand access to excellent and equitable data science education.
CDSS and the College of Engineering share the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and house undergraduate computer science programs leading to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, respectively.
CDSS also houses Berkeley's statistics major. U.S. News does not rank undergraduate statistics programs.
